MacLennan's Pronouncing & Etymological Gaelic-English/English-Gaelic Dictionary

I still like this dictionary if for nothing else than the etymology. Though dated (especially the English-Gaelic section) it is still a great referenceand the only Gaelic-English/English-Gaelic dictionary of any size. The English-Gaelic section is second only to Roy Wentworth's Gaelic Words and Expressions from Wester Ross and only Dwelly's has a larger Gaelic-English section (minus the pronunication).

Ronald Black's Cothrom Ionnsachaidh

The best Gaelic grammar currently available is based on a first year university Gaelic course. The new edition has audio CDs which can be purchased separately.

Everyday Gaelic

A very handy phrase book for students of Gaelic wishing to learn expressions for every day situations. Vocabulary and phrases are arranged into categories. Pronunciation included and now available with a CD.

Abair! Dictionary or Scottish Gaelic-English/English-Scottish Gaelic Dictionary

Inexpensive dictionary, compact and easy to carry around. Contains the various cases of words (genative, dative, plural, etc...). As expected it is not entirely complete as reference books go but very handy all the same.

Dwelly's Illustrated Gaelic-English Dictionary

Foremost reference for the Gaelic language. Highly recommended for the serious learner, this is the most extensive dictionary of the Gaelic language available. Also has a section on place/surnames of Scotland and figures from Gaelic myths and legends. Based on Dwelly's original version published between 1901 and 1911. NOTE: The Gairm edition of Dwelly's is out of print.

The above is our recommendations based on our own experience with Gaelic learner materials. If you have your own recommendations for learner materials (or comments on the above titles) or indeed any Gaelic book please e-mail us your comments.
