Gaelic Book Publishing Club

We at Sìol Cultural Enterprises are dedicated to producing quality Gaelic books and materials for Gaels wherever they may be. The costs of producing such material is, however, expensive and the returns small. You can help us, however, to reproduce older and newer materials for the enjoyment of today's and tomorrow's Gaels by joining our Gaelic Book Publishing Club.

There are no fees, no obligation to buy, to be a part of the club, only a willingness on your part to support Gaelic publishing. The club will work like this - when a book is being made ready for publication it will be announced to the club members. Should a member wish to assist us by pre-purchasing a copy of the book, their name will be placed in the Tabula Gratulatoria section at the front of the book (payment must be received prior to publication - VISA and Mastercard are accepted).

Societies can show their support by pre-purchasing a block of the book (about 20 copies) which will entitle them to half a page of ad space at the back of the book. Ad space will also be given to organizations or businesses wishing to purchase it * (prices will vary based on cost and distribution of each publication - please contact us directly regarding this).

O Cheapaich nan Craobh - The Poetry of the Keppoch Bard

Alasdair Ailein Mhóir (Dòmhnallach), known as Bàrd na Ceapaich, was born in Moidart, Scotland in 1820. He moved with his family to the Keppoch area of Antigonish County (Nova Scotia) in 1830 where he would spend most of the remainder of his years. It was here, in a vast wilderness, which he called Ceapach nan Craobh, where snow six feet deep blocked all access to the mountainous region for much of the year, that he found inspiration to write some of the best poetry found in the New World.

The Rev. A. Maclean Sinclair believed him the last of the old bards and the best of his days, and perhaps only surpassed by the great Bard MacLean, whose "A' Choille Gruamach" and "Am Bal Ghàidhealach" are still sung today. The Bàrd na Ceapaich himself made little effort to preserve his songs and when he died in Springhill, Nova Scotia in 1904, much of his poetry went with him.

This collection of his surviving poetry has been pieced together, through painstaking research, from a variety of sources. These 18+ songs (and 3 additional poems about the bard) range in style and purpose from satirical lays to 8 and 16 line bardic verse and from sorrowful to humourous.

The book measures 8.5" X 5.5" (softcover), over 100 pages (est.), with English translations, and an accompanying CD of a selection of his tunes being sung.

Robert Louis Stevenson's tale was translated into Gaelic by the late Jonathon MacKinnon (editor of Mac-Talla) near the end of his life but was never published. Recently this manuscript has come to light and is being published as he wrote it. A CD will be published with it.
